What I Think Kenya Will Be vs. What I’m Bracing to Actually Learn

Expectation: Ol Pejeta will be “more of the same” after the Mara.

Reality: Ol Pejeta’s conservation work – including the last northern white rhinos on Earth – means this stop is going to hit differently. Safari destinations aren’t interchangeable, and I already know that.

Expectation: Tsavo is a quick add-on between the “main” stops.

Reality: I picked Tsavo specifically for the red-dust elephants, so this isn’t a lesser stop, it’s one I’ve been looking forward to.

Expectation: The coast (Watamu and beyond) is just vacation mode after safari.

Reality: Coastal Kenya has its own culture, history, and rhythm that has nothing to do with safari. Treating it as a decompression add-on would be a mistake.

Expectation: My best friend and I know how we travel together.

Reality: We actually do, this time. Last summer we did four countries in three weeks across Asia together, so this isn’t our first high-mileage trip. What’s different is the terrain – safari logistics, early mornings, and long stretches without much connectivity are new territory even for two people who’ve traveled together for four decades.

I’ll report back in a few weeks with the real version of this list.
